Roofing leaks can cause major damage if they aren't attended to right away. These steps can help you to minimize the damage from a roofing leak.

Step 1: Call a Roofing Contractor

The earlier you can call a roofing contractor, the better. They may be able to come out the same day to inspect the roof, note the cause of the leak, and create a treatment plan for you. There are many potential sources of leaks that they will look for, such as damage from nails or other sharp objects, areas where the roof's sealant is damaged, and missing shingles. The roof leak can also sometimes be due to clogged gutters that are causing erosion on the roof.

Step 2: Protect the Room

Right after you call a roofing contractor, try to protect the area as much as possible from water damage. Start with the floors; you may want to put down plastic covering to avoid rotting your hardwood floors or getting carpets full of mildew. Remove as many small items from the room as you can. Plastic furniture covers can help to protect your upholstery. If you have a dehumidifier or circulating fan, it's a good idea to bring it into the room to avoid mold.

Step 3: Drain the Leakage

If your roofing contractor isn't coming right away, ask them if it's worthwhile to drain the leakage from your roof. This would involve making the hole in the roof slightly wider so that any pools of water can get out. Leaving pools of water in the roof isn't a good idea because it may cause the roof to crack, bubble, and even buckle.

Step 4: Get the Roof Fixed

The potential fixes for a leaky roof are varied. You may be able to get away with replacing a few damaged or missing shingles using a roof installation contractor. Sometimes the only fix needed is to repair the sealant around a chimney or other break in the roof's surface. But your roof installation contractor may also encounter issues with the foundation of your roof, which could require a full roofing replacement.

Step 5: File an Insurance Claim

The final, optional step is to check your home insurance policy to see if they will help cover any of the roofing leak damages. If your personal property is included as part of your insurance policy, then you may be able to file a claim for anything that was damaged by the leak.
